Absorção de metais pesados do lodo de esgoto pelo feijoeiro (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) BABT
Miyazawa,Mário; Oliveira,Edson L. de; Parra,Mauro S.; Yamashita,Miyuki.
Toxicity and uptake of heavy metals of sewage sludge by beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) were evaluated in green house experiments. Treatments consisted of 1,0 ; 2,0 and 5,0% (m/m) of dry sewage sludge, collected from Londrina (Bom Retiro and ETE-Sul) and Curitiba (ETE-Belém and RALF). Bean ( variety IAPAR 57) was sown three times at 0, 120 and 240 days after the treatments have been applied. Contents of Cd, Cr, Co, Cu, Ni, and Pb in bean tissues cultivated with 5,0% (m/m) of all sewage sludge were similar to the control and Ba contents were reduced by increasing the quantity of sewage sludge in the soil. The Zn content in tissue bean incresed from 86 mg kg-1 of control to 462 mg kg-1 by applying 5% (m/m) of sewage sludge in soil, but plant beans did not show...

Bioaccumulation of mercury, cadmium, zinc, chromium, and lead in muscle, liver, and spleen tissues of a large commercially valuable catfish species from Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Arantes,Fábio P.; Savassi,Lourenço A.; Santos,Hélio B.; Gomes,Marcos V.T.; Bazzoli,Nilo.
The increasing amounts of heavy metals entering aquatic environments can result in high accumulation levels of these contaminants in fish and their consumers, which pose a serious risk to ecosystems and human health. We investigated the concentrations of mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), zinc (Zn), chromium (Cr), and lead (Pb) in muscle, liver, and spleen tissues of Pseudoplatystoma corruscans specimens collected from two sites on the Paraopeba River, Brazil. The level of heavy metals concentrations in the tissues was often higher in viscera (i.e. liver and spleen) than in muscle, and thus, the viscera should not be considered for human consumption. Correlations between metal concentrations and fish size were not significant. Although the levels of muscle...

Biosolids conditioning and the availability of Cu and Zn for rice Scientia Agricola
Pires,Adriana Marlene Moreno; Mattiazzo,Maria Emília.
Sewage treatment process is a factor to be considered for biosolid use in agriculture. The greatest sewage treatment facility of São Paulo State (Barueri/SP) altered in the year 2000 of its sludge treatment. The addition of ferric chloride and calcium oxide was substituted by the addition of polymers. This change can modify heavy metal phytoavailability. A green house experiment, using 2 soils treated with biosolids (three with and one without polymers with and without polymers) was performed to evaluate Cu and Zn phytoavailability using rice (Oryza sativa L.) as test plant. Three kilograms of two soils (Haphorthox abd Hapludox) were placed in pots and the equivalent to 50 Mg ha-1 (dry basis) of biosolid was added and incorporated. The statistical design...

Effect of Organic Matter on Manganese Solubility BABT
Andrade,Emilene; Miyazawa,Mário; Pavan,Marcos A.; Oliveira,Edson L. de.
The objective of this study was to re-evaluate some aspects of the relative importance of organic matter on Mn solubility in acid soil conditions. Field study showed that black oats, oil seed radish, elephant grass, lupin, leucaena, and coffee leaves serving as mulch decreased Mn solubility as compared with bare soil. The decrease in Mn solubility with plant mulch was related to increase in soil moisture content. Laboratory study showed that increasing temperature from 25 to 100ºC increased Mn solubility and total soil organic carbon was little changed; from 150 to 200ºC increased both Mn solubility and organic carbon oxidation, and up to 300ºC decreased Mn solubility and stoped organic carbon oxidation . Aluminum solubility always increased with...

Effectivity of anti-oxidative enzymatic system on diminishing the oxidative stress induced by aluminium in chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) seedlings Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Singh,Sushant; Verma,Anil; Dubey,Vikash Kumar.
We explore physiological and biochemical response under increasing aluminium stress at different time interval in chickpea seedlings (Cicer arietinum L.). Germination percentage and root length were found to be highly reduced under increasing metal stress. Aluminium induced oxidative stress and led to fluctuations in antioxidative activity responses. Roots showed higher antioxidative activity compared to shoots. Low concentration of aluminium after a brief treatment induced higher superoxide dismutase (SOD; EC 1.15.1.1), ascorbate peroxidase (APX; EC 1.11.1.11) and guaiacol peroxidase (GPX; EC 1.11.1.7) activity whereas longer duration of treatment led to decrease in these activities. Malondialdehyde concentration indicated higher oxidative damage in roots...

Effects of hormonal priming on seed germination of pigeon pea under cadmium stress Anais da ABC (AABC)
SNEIDERIS,LARISSA C.; GAVASSI,MARINA A.; CAMPOS,MARCELO L.; D'AMICO-DAMIÃO,VICTOR; CARVALHO,ROGÉRIO F..
In this work we investigated whether priming with auxin, cytokinin, gibberellin, abscisic acid and ethylene, alters the physiological responses of seeds of pigeon pea germinated under water and cadmium stress. Seeds treated with water or non-treated seeds were used as control. Although compared to non-treated seeds we found that the hormone treatments improve the germination of pigeon pea under cadmium stress, however, these treatments did not differ from water. However, we also observed a trend of tolerance to the effects of cadmium in the presence of ethylene, suggesting that the use of this hormone may be an efficient method to overcome seed germination under metal stress.

Geochemistry and mineralogy of recent sediments of Guanabara Bay (NE sector) and its major rivers - Rio de Janeiro State - Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
FARIA,MARCIA DE MELO; SANCHEZ,BRAZ A..
Geochemical and clay mineralogical studies of bottom sediments collected along the Macacu and Caceribu rivers and Guanabara Bay were carried out in order to investigate the relationship between major source areas and recent sediments of the bay. Clay mineralogy includes different groups with selective distribution conditioned by geomorphic features and depositional settings. Micaceous clay minerals are abundant near parent rock in the upper course, whereas kaolinite derived from varied sources is gradually concentrated towards the estuary. In the Guanabara Bay, kaolinite accumulates near river mouths, while micaceous clay minerals are converted into mixed layers in the estuary. Analyses of heavy metal contents reveal higher levels of Zn and Cu in sediments...
